Having a home wine cellar allows the serious wine lover to stash away their favorite wine bottles and keep them on hand for weeknight dinners or special occasions.  A residential wine cellar provides a climate controlled environment, where wines can peak under stable conditions, and at the same time creates a space where wine enthusiasts can showcase their wine collection.

A residential wine room can be built into just about any available living space in a home.  A carefully constructed custom wine cellar design should create an enclave that is ideal for organizing, displaying, and aging a vast collection of fine wines within the confines of one’s home.  Choosing the right wine cellar furniture and installing the proper support infrastructure is crucial to building an efficient wine room, regardless of its size.

The Yorba Linda Wine Cellar Design Specifications: Custom Wine Racks

This recently completed custom wine cellar design project in Yorba Linda, California showcases how a small niche can be transformed into a 392-bottle capacity wine cellar.  The newly converted wine room used to be an arched space located at the end of the hallway.  Measuring 8’ x 8’ with a depth of 30 inches, Coastal Custom Wine Cellars maximized available space by installing a mix of single and double deep wine cellar racks.

The top part of custom wine racks Yorba Linda California consist of an arched tabletop, flanked by two columns of single deep individual bottle slots with a high reveal display row.  Single bottle openings can accommodate most standard 750 ml wine bottles.  The display area below it pitches bottles to a 15 degree angle that provides full visibility of wine labels, while ensuring sealing quality of the cork by keeping it in contact with the wine.

The far left and the far right section of custom wine racks Yorba Linda California feature wine cabinets and small drawers that provide additional storage room for liquors, stemware glasses, and wine accessories (such as napkins and cork screws).  Additionally, a spacious tabletop area is provided for serving and decanting wines.

The bottom half of the custom wine racks consist of several openings for single bottle storage and bulk storage.  To increase the total bottle capacity of the wine enclave, Coastal installed wine cellar racks in double deep configuration.  Diamond bins are provided for storing large amounts of wine bottles of different sizes.  On either side of the diamond bins are single column bottle openings for standard sized bottles, and square openings for case lots.

Custom wine racks Yorba Linda California rest on a 1 ½” toe-kick, elevating the components off the floor and thus preventing breakage or damage to the wine bottles.  The custom wine racks also feature a beautiful base trim and crown molding at the top to enhance décor and add aesthetic appeal.

Custom Wine Racks Alternative: Metal Wine Cellar Racking

Wooden wine racks add a very classic touch to any wine cellar. They’re traditional, rustic, homey, warm, and fresh to look at.  If you’re out looking for a more modern take on wine cellar racks, though, you have the option to use metal for the racks. There are W-shaped wine racks, metal wine pegs, and cable wine racks in the market, and you can request the manufacturer to custom it according to your space, budget, and design preferences.  While metal wine racks look good in both combination and fully-modern wine cellars, they’re what you often see in modern glass wine cellars. Installation of the Split Wine Cellar Cooling System by Arctic

To regulate climate conditions inside the small wine enclave, a split wine cellar cooling system was installed by Arctic Metalworks.  The evaporator part of the cooling system was mounted inside a lattice grill box, located above the arched portion of the wine cellar racks, while the condensing unit was located remotely.  A custom designed operable grill cover keeps the mechanical equipment hidden from view, and allows for ease of access to the unit during repair or maintenance service.

The installation of brick veneer panels added a rustic look to the Yorba Linda wine enclave, and complemented the appearance of the installed custom wine racks.  Completing the overall look of the custom wine cellar design is a seamless glass entryway, which provides an unobstructed view of the tastefully designed wine cellar furniture from the outside.

For this wine cellar project, professional wine cellar installers Coastal Custom Wine Cellars teamed up with Arctic Metalworks Wine Cellar Cooling Specialist and general contractor Dave Lakin.  The Arctic team took care of installing the refrigeration components while Dave removed the arch, prepped the space (applied insulation, drywall, vapor barriers, etc.) and installed brick veneer siding.

Wine Cellar Cooling System Installation by Team Arctic

We teamed up with Arctic Metalworks to install a split-system wine cellar cooling unit in this home. The line set had to be installed first before we closed off the wall, so the coils were well concealed. This was also a ductless split system which means that besides the evaporator and condenser being in separate housings, the air pass through coils instead of large ducts. Ductless systems are great for homes that don’t have a spacious ceiling.
