Get to know more about what kind of wine racks we used and how we installed them to make this modern glass wine cellar a dream come true!

Planning and Pre-Construction of This Home Wine Cellar

Custom wine racking is a project we’re always excited about. It allows us to precisely follow through with your vision and create a wine display that’s absolutely unique in every corner and side. For this beautiful, contemporary home, the owner wanted to showcase their collection in the dining room. The main challenge was the exact area where they wanted the wine closet to be had a bar counter and post — both came with the original house. With this, we had to demolish both the post and bar counter first, assess the remainder, and create a plan around the conditions.

One thing was clear, though, to keep the space feeling “open,” the wine racking for this modern wine cellar had to be ceiling and floor-mounted, and it had to be enclosed in glass all around!

Innovative Custom Wine Rack Ideas for Both Modern and Combination-Style Wine Cellars

It may have seemed that the space was a bit limited after we took out the bar counter and post, but because we were customizing the wine racks, the small space wasn’t a problem at all. In fact, the entire wine rack here could hold over 900 wine bottles, including magnums!

For a quick run-through, here are the unique features of this wine cellar and modern wine racking:

  • All the bottles are positioned label-forward, and you’ll be able to read the labels no matter which side of the cellar you are facing
  • The Check out Vintage View’s new wine rack colors here!, so it somewhat camouflaged with the dark-tinted bottles (not to mention they look ultra-classy!).
  • All the racks are stainless steel.
  • The wine cellar comes with an efficient climate control system (a well-calculated combination of insulation, wine cellar cooling system, and glass sealing).
  • This custom wine racking can store both standard 750ml bottles and magnum bottles (>1600ml).
  • Adequately-spaced racks for safe and convenient recovery of bottles.
  • Four-door glass wine cellar
Custom Metal Wine Rack Ideas

We ensure our custom wine rack ideas are unique to every homeowner — like creating this wine wall that serves as a space divider!

Wine Racking of Choice: Vintage View Wine Racks – Wall Series

Vintage View has been a highly trusted manufacturer of metal wine racks in the industry since 2001. They have a great collection of wall-mounted, floating (floor and ceiling-mounted), and free-standing metal wine racks made of premium steel that come in different finishes. One can choose from brushed nickel, chrome luxe, golden bronze luxe, gunmetal luxe, matte black, and many other polishes.

For this home wine cellar’s wine racks, we chose Vintage View’s W Series, double-sided, floating wine racks. The parts (frame, pegs, base plates) were shipped individually and assembled on-site. We also had the rack custom-made, such that one side had single-deep bottles and the other had triple-deep bottles. Most of Vintage View’s vertical frames are 10 feet tall, but they can be cut to fit the height of your space. Overall, this rack had 24 rows and 11 columns of wine bottles, including the magnums — a custom installation that was well worth its value!

Wine Cooling System of Choice: US Cellar Systems

Have you ever left a bottle of wine open or loosely shut and drafnk it the day after? If you haven’t, just imagine a coke that had lost its soul and only sugar is left. That’s kind of how wine becomes when not stored properly — minus the sugar. When wine is exposed to heat and moisture, the flavor, smell, and consistency changes. That’s why it’s important to keep them in a well-refrigerated area, completely sealed from warm air.

There are tons of wine cellar cooling systems out there. Each has its own shape, size, finish, and cooling capacity. There are window-type ACs, ducted cooling units, self-contained cooling units, and more. You’ll need the help of a professional, like Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, to identify what cooling system would efficiently cool your wine cellar and fit into your home. Our team always conducts a heat load assessment to determine how strong your wine cooling unit should be.

W-Series Custom Wine Rack Ideas for Home Wine Cellar

Our custom wine rack ideas most often consider convenience and balance. Doesn’t this arrangement and organization look so satisfying? We think so!

Wine Cellar Cooling for Custom Wine Cellars

For this wine cellar, we collaborated with Dan from US Cellar Systems to provide us with the cooling system we needed. After discussing our options, we decided on the US Cellar Systems LPQ 12000 TE. LPQ stands for “low profile quiet,” which means that this commercial-grade cooling system operates without any heavy sound or vibration. The LPQ 12000 TE is a split-system, ductless cooling unit with 1.5 horsepower and 12,000 BTU.

Professionally-Done Wine Cellar Cooling System Installation

Before installing the cooling system in our wine cellar, our team built a custom soffit first, a soffit that did not exist on the original layout. This kept the coils hidden and prevented them from dangling around the cellar and provided a sturdy base for the floor-to-ceiling metal wine rack frames to anchor on.

This here is a ductless split-system cooling unit. Ductless variants are great for homes that don’t have large ceiling spaces like what commercial buildings have. The air passes through coils that are hidden on the wall or the soffit (in this case), and it requires lighter maintenance works compared to a fully ducted split system wine cellar cooling unit.

Backtrack more. Before building the soffit, we made sure to insulate the ceiling with spray foam insulation. Spray foam insulation is one of our most highly recommended types of insulation for wine cellars because it can slide into tiny holes and crevices easily, and it already has vapor-blocking capacities.

We provide more than just wine rack ideas; we efficiently weather-proof your wine cellar too!

Custom Wine Rack Ideas for Modern Wine Cellars!

Whether you’re in the northwest, the southeast, or anywhere in the country where temperatures are often fluctuating and the ambient microclimate seems to be unfavorable for wine preservation, you don’t have to worry because we’ve got your back! All our glass panels, like the ones you see in this modern wine cellar beside the stairs, are tempered and sealed on the edges. We use at least ½” tempered glass and run U-channels on the top and bottom edges. On the access side of the wine closet, we installed 2 pairs of doors with black handles. Unlike regular shower doors, we used pivot hinges with steam seals to connect the doors to the glass paneling. Once you open the doors, the height and width limit of the opening is about 148″ x 96″.

The thickness of the glass panels may vary depending on your insulation requirements. In some areas where temperature fluctuations are more frequent and severe, we may recommend thicker glass panels or double-paned glass panels. As the name suggests, double-paned glass panels involves the use of two separate panels sandwiched together. Some manufacturers even inject Argon between the 2 glass panels to enhance insulation. When you work with custom wine cellar builders who have the passionate to innovate like Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, you’ll know the technology brought into your wine cellar is proven and tested for longevity and efficiency.
