Cable Wine Racking in an Ultra-Modern Home Wine Cellar

What Makes This Modern Home Wine Cellar NEXT LEVEL!

Where would you build a modern glass wine display in your home?

The Orange County-based Coastal Custom Wine Cellars team recently built another beautiful modern home wine cellar. The team built this wine cellar with a contemporary design in mind.  The minimalist approach in its wine racking system, the abundance of straight lines in the overall design, and the innovative LED lighting give this wine cellar a modern look. Initial Construction of the Modern Home Wine Cellar Project

The client contacted the Coastal team to build a modern home wine cellar for his house. First off, the team had to tear the wall down to the studs to build the wine cellar. Once the team did the demolition work, they ran the electrical lines for the lighting and the cooling unit. After that, the team installed a close cell foam application. This foam application will serve as a vapor barrier. It will also provide a proper seal for the wine cellar and help get the proper R-value for the wine room.

The team then mounted plywood on the wall, to help support all the weight on the back wall. Similarly, the team also used plywood as additional support for the soffit. The team then added the needed finish and texture for the wall. After they were done with that, the crew started installing the cable wine racking system.

Contemporary Wine Storage Design

The cable wine racking system is something that would definitely leave visitors to this modern glass wine cellar in awe. Wine bottles appear to be floating in midair. At the same time, the shiny finish of the cable wine racking system adds more visual appeal to the wine collection.

But don’t be fooled by its minimal look. Cable wine racking systems can support almost all bottle sizes. Two stainless-steel cables support the weight at the front and another two stainless-steel cables support at the back for each bottle. These tension cables are held in place by sturdy metallic clamps on both ends. Cable wine racking can withstand slight vibration and even light earthquakes. With this type of wine racking in your wine cellar, you can confidently say that your wine collection is stored securely.

Aside from being aesthetically captivating, cable wine racking has pros that you can take advantage.

  • A cable wine racking system allows flexibility in displaying the labels of your wine bottles. You can position bottles so that the upper bottles will show their labels facing down, and those on the lower bottles will be facing up. It will make organizing and retrieving bottles in your wine cellar a breeze.
  • Gaps between bottles mean air can circulate well between them. It translates to better temperature regulation for your wine cellar.
  • The symmetrical arrangement of wine bottles will give your wine cellar a minimalist and modern feel.
  • You can virtually store almost any bottle size. Owing to the engineering ingenuity of its tension cable design, you can store a wide range of bottle sizes.
  • A cable wine racking system can help reduce vibrations to bottles placed in it. These vibrations could disturb the delicate aging process of wine. Secured and stable storage is one of the critical features of cable wine racking systems.

For this project, the racking system can store up to 500 bottles. That’s a large volume of wine bottles for such a small area in this client’s home! Then the team also installed bronze mirrors to create an illusion that makes the wine cellar appear bigger.

The Coastal team also built a custom-made wine cabinet of Knotty Alder wood with espresso stain and lacquer finish for this wine cellar. The client can store bottles and other memorabilia inside it. And on the top of the cabinet, he could either decant his wine or place larger bottles for display and storage.

Noise-free and Efficient Cooling Unit

Another thing worth noting about this wine cellar is the cooling unit. You can hear no noise coming from the refrigeration unit inside the wine cellar. That’s great since you could enjoy savoring your favorite wines without any ambient noise to disturb you.

The Coastal team installed an HS46 unit from US Cellars System for this wine cellar. It is a split-type cooling unit. The team strategically placed the condensing unit outside and the evaporating coils up in the soffit. It is a ducted unit. So, that setup will nullify cooling unit noise.

The reduction or elimination of cooling unit noise in the interior of the wine room is something that fans of modern and contemporary wine cellar design aim to achieve. Gone are the days when you could hear a monotonous hum coming from the refrigeration unit while sipping your wine inside your wine cellar. But, on the other end of the spectrum, some of our clients who had traditional wine cellars also incorporated ducted cooling units into their wine cellars.

Modern Home Wine Cellar Lighting

Another spectacular aspect of this ultra-modern wine cellar is the LED lighting panel. It was built from an acrylic board with LED lighting mounted behind it. The result is an adjustable glow coming from the panel, highlighting the already beautiful wine collection. This type of wine lighting has been steadily rising in popularity among our clients since we first introduced it to the market.

The bulbs used for lighting were LED, which don’t emit heat. Extra heat in a wine cellar can affect the temperature and humidity, which could ruin the wine. Also, these are RGB LED lighting which means you can change the color and brightness based on your mood and preference.

Glass Panels Were Installed for the Door and Walls of the Ultra-Modern Wine Cellar

The team used single-paned glass for the doors and the sidewalls of the glass wine cellar. Then, the glass panels were enclosed in a u-channel. The u-channel and the half-inch tempered glass provide the much-needed seal for the glass wine cellar for insulation. Failure to seal the wine room may lead to condensation problems in the wine cellar. The interior of the wine cellar shouldn’t be affected by the external temperature and humidity fluctuations.

Abrupt changes of either temperature or humidity may precipitate condensation inside the wine cellar. Condensation promotes the growth of molds in the wine room. Take note that mold growth and excess moisture in the wine room will destroy the sealing property of the cork in your wine bottles. Oxidation will happen. And it will ruin the quality of your wine or cause premature aging of your wine collection.

The Right Way of Installing Glass Panels for Your Modern Home Wine Cellar

Installing glass panels for your modern California home wine cellar may sound appealing. But you must work with professionals, like Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, to ensure that it will be built and installed correctly. Amateur and inexperienced contractors and builders may promise you to build a glass wine cellar for a lesser price. But you could be compromising on the quality. A builder that is untrained and inexperienced in wine cellar construction may tell you that a ¼ inch glass would work. But in reality, it won’t suffice. With the temperatures here rising and plummeting to the extremes, condensation would be inevitable in the wine cellar if you use a glass panel that is less than a ½ inch thick.

Here are some helpful tips for installing glass panels for doors and walls for your modern home wine cellar:

  • Use pivot hinges for the doors. Pivot hinges should be installed in specific locations (at the top and bottom of the door). Using ordinary hinges won’t provide the same sealing power as pivot hinges.
  • U-channels should be utilized for each glass panel.
  • You should at least use ½ inch frameless glass. Using anything less would not be feasible for a glass wine cellar build.
  • There should be seals at every entrance. The team usually uses a transparent and clear gasket for this type of application. It will seal the wine cellar every time you close the glass doors.

These are some of the tips and guidelines that you should be familiar with in building an efficient glass wine cellar. And it is of utmost importance that you work with professionals and experts, like Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, in installing glass panels for your wine cellar. Their experience and knowledge in building wine cellars will go a long way in storing your wine collection safely and securely.
