Creating A Wine Wall Design Inspired from An Award-Winning Wine Rack!

Have you been scouring the internet for the best wine wall designs you can use for your custom wine cellar? It can be incredibly overwhelming to choose the design that suits you.  But what if you follow what this client did to decide on his modern wine wall design! It’s genius, time-saving, and especially creative!

Creating a Modern Custom Wine Cellar With A Unique Wine Wall Design

Coastal Custom Wine Cellars took a project which involves creating not one, but two modern custom wine cellars for a client. Located at Newport Coast, California, the project involved having two wine cellars built along with the on-going construction of the client’s home.  Coastal led the construction of the two modern-looking custom wine cellars — including the design behind it, the incredible stainless steel wine rack from Iron Wine Cellars, and choosing the ducted cooling system based on the client’s preferences.

The Bare Room

For this new million-dollar home, the client wanted a custom wine cellar where guests can revel in the sophisticated ambiance, as well as enjoy drinking wine and talking with friends. The biggest cellar was to be constructed within the massive basement designated as the main entertainment space of the house. Specifically, the basement was to be transformed into a nightclub-ish entertainment den.

The owner wanted a modern and unique wine cellar with a wine wall design that’s something that has never been seen before. So our team was elated to draft and produce the best wine cellar design for this special client!

Setting Up the Foundation of This Custom Wine Cellar

The best wine cellars in the world always start with the right structural foundations. Regardless of the cellar’s design — whether it’s traditional, rustic, stone-washed, or ultra-modern — setting up the right amount of insulation and vapor barrier is an important step to ensure water vapor from outside does not penetrate into the cellar.

For wine cellars in general, using spray foam insulation or polyurethane insulation is the best way to seal even the tiniest holes and cracks on the wall. We partnered with another contractor who specialized in insulation, and they applied about 2.5″-3″ of spray foam to guarantee proper sealing.

A No-Nuisance Wine Cellar Cooling Unit For Large Wine Cellars

Next to the insulation, we needed to set-up the cooling system. This modern wine cellar was 10ft x 14ft, so you can imagine that it needed a large and powerful commercial wine cooling unit.

Besides that, since the basement was expected to be packed with people enjoying themselves, the owner wanted the wine cooling unit to be as noiseless as possible. He didn’t want his guests hearing buzzing noises from the machine, distracting the party from unnecessary sound.

We told him that the best option for this would be a ducted wine cellar cooling system, where the condenser is placed outside and away from the wine cellar, and only the air inlets and vents are visible in the cellar.

Air inlets for ducted wine cellar cooling units can be set up on the ceiling or on the wall. But for this wine room, we decided the ceiling was the most suitable place to install the registers.

Main Wine Wall Design

For modern wine cellars, wine racking is usually built from steel (metal rods, wine pegs, cable racks, and more). We were incredibly lucky enough that the client was very hands on with this project and he had a clear vision of what he wanted the cellar to look like. We had the best time exchanging wine wall design ideas with the client, and two of his biggest preferences were that the entire rack was to be made from polished stainless steel and that the design would be inspired by one of our lead designer’s previous wine racks that won “Wine Rack of the Year”!

We custom-made an entire rack for this wall and it features 14 rows of bottle storage, 4 of which where high-reveal display rows. We also incorporated 3 special display areas for magnum bottles which gave an interesting touch to the rack.

Since the room’s height was relatively high, we attached a rolling ladder permanently anchored to the wine rack. This way, the owner would be able to reach the bottles stored on the upper parts of the shelf. The ladder had the same color and material as the main rack, and we custom-made it as well for this project.

As a final touch to the cellar, puck lights were installed on the ceiling and an acrylic LED wall was installed behind the rack. The LED panel came with RGD light bulbs, so the owner can switch the light’s colors depending on the mood of the party. Isn’t that awesome?!
