Coastal Custom Wine Cellars has been designing stunning wine rooms for many years, and the project we have completed in Hawaii is a must-see! We created a well-thought-out design for the home wine cellar, exceeding the expectations of the owners. The distinctive features we incorporated will impress you!

Custom Home Wine Cellar Designed with Distinctive Features

Coastal Custom Wine Cellars designed another outstanding wine cellar for a home in Hawaii. We incorporated stylish features that will make the wine room look luxurious without going beyond the client’s budget. With our team’s creativity, passion, and extensive experience, we were able to create a wine storage system that would display the client’s collection safely and beautifully. This custom home wine cellar is the focal point in the owner’s elegant dining area.

We are pleased to debut one of our latest custom wine cellars completed in the city of Honolulu on the island of Oahu in Hawaii.  It is because it is one of our favorite jobs and a great example of outstanding taste and design. The wine racking was built in mahogany and left unfinished for a pleasing natural look.

The wine cellar has a capacity of 2,446 wine bottles as well as several distinctive design features. The natural look does a great job of complementing the clients’ dark stained cabinet and sink, which is a focal point of the wine room. The mix just works.

Custom Wine Racks Designed with Sophistication

For Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, keen attention to detail, creativity, and knowledge are crucial when designing wine racks. In every project that we do, we always consider the specific requirements of the client to ensure that everything is in place and the correct components are installed. We always include features that would go well with the existing décor of the home. There is nothing too big or too small for the Coastal team.

The wood species chosen for this job was Mahogany, and it was intentionally left unfinished, as unfinished mahogany is beautiful.  The wood’s light tan color was perfect for creating a very pleasing natural look.

Wine Racks on the Back Wall

Since the back wall is longer than the sidewalls, we combined various racking styles to maximize the storage capacity of the custom home wine cellar.

One of the challenging jobs in this project was the need to complement the existing family heirloom cabinetry and incorporate a sink on the front and center wall. They wanted the sink and heirloom cabinet to be surrounded by the racking.

We installed tabletops made from granite, which was chosen by the client. We had to calculate the thickness of the tabletop carefully to get a perfect finish. We also created a lattice-style arch opening above the heirloom, and we surrounded it with individual wine racks.

A high reveal display row lines the middle of the racking. It is designed to pitch the bottles at an angle to keep the cork in contact with the wine. Keeping it moist will prevent it from drying out and getting brittle. When the cork dries out, it will decrease in size and fail to perform its function which is to seal the bottle. When this happens, an unwanted amount of oxygen will enter the bottle and cause wine oxidation. Wine will have off-flavors and aromas.

The bottom section of the racking on the back wall consists of diamond bins located on both sides of the heirloom cabinet. This wine rack style is elegant and ideal for bulk storage.

Racking Design on the Side Walls

We utilized the walls to the left and right of the door. We included diamond bins, single storage racks, and a high reveal display row on both sides. We also installed curved corner wine racks to create a smooth transition from the sidewalls to the back wall. We added a quarter round display rack for storing magnum bottles vertically, decanters, and other decorative items. The corners are designed with true radiuses, which means there are no unsightly angles or segmented cornering to any part of this wine cellar.

We incorporated Barolo French-style custom wine cellar doors with glass and custom wrought iron detail, offering an attractive grapevine look. The wood we used on the doors is made of Knotty Alder with early American stain and finish.

The doors were manufactured to handle the temperature difference between the dining room and the wine cellar. The glass panels we used for the doors were thermally insulated to prevent condensation build-up and mold growth. We also equipped the doors with weather stripping to create an airtight seal, necessary for maintaining the ideal storage conditions inside the custom home wine cellar.

In the video describing this custom home wine cellar project, we show you through the design drawings, concepts, and constraints behind the finished wine cellar.  This cellar is designed to be a focal point of an elegant dining area, not just a basement wine storage room, so it had to live up to the rest of the room, becoming a focal point in keeping with the existing décor.

One of the required design elements for this wine room was working around the family heirloom cabinet to be the featured centerpiece of the room and surrounded with wine racking.
