A Closer Look at a Cigar Humidor Built Into a Custom Wine Cellar

How to Create a Custom Cigar Humidor INSIDE Your Wine Cellar

The wine cellars we create are as varied as our clients, and we take great pride in creating beautiful works of functional art that meet their diverse needs.

Andre and his team recently built a contemporary wine cellar for a couple in Port Street. The wife loves wine and the husband enjoys smoking cigars. To unify their passion, the team created a humidor for the husband’s cigar collection inside the wine cellar. This is actually the first project where Andre built a custom cigar humidor for a client. But nonetheless, Andre and his team delivered results the client was looking for.

Cigar Humidor Inside a Wine Cellar

What is a Humidifier and Can You Really Install a Cigar Humidor Inside Your Wine Cellar?

This truly impressive cigar humidor and wine cellar is enclosed by clear, frameless glass walls and door.

A humidifier is any device that can maintain relative humidity (moisture) within an area that a user needs. The higher the humidity, the more moisture there is in an area. Cigars need to be stored in a humidor at approximately 68-74% humidity to maintain their pristine condition.

The aroma and flavor of a cigar could be affected by the relative humidity in the cigar humidor. A parched cigar in a humidor with low humidity would burn at a faster rate and have a much more bitter taste. While a cigar stored in a humidor with higher humidity would burn a bit slower and would have a full and sour flavor.

How you set the humidity levels in your humidor determines the final flavor of your cigars. That’s just one of the benefits of installing a humidor inside your wine cellar. But, more importantly, a humidor will prolong the shelf life of your cigars. Keep in mind that setting your humidor to 80% or above would cause the cigars to rot and molds to grow.

How Does an Auto Fill Wine Cellar Cigar Humidor Work?

You have to check the water levels inside your humidifier regularly to prevent damage to your unit and to your cigar collection. This is a usual scenario for a traditional humidifier.

An autofill wine cellar cigar humidor removes this annoying and repetitive process for you. It has a mechanism when the water level reaches a relatively low level, it will trigger the reservoir or source of the water to inject water into the water tank of the humidifier.

This simple fix is a lifesaver, especially for those who have a busy lifestyle. We all have the tendency at times to forget simple things like checking the water levels if they’re still at their optimum levels. Now, if you have a self-filling humidifier for your humidor inside your wine cellar, you won’t have to worry about minute details like that. It’ll just fix itself.

Andre and his team understand that his client wants to maintain the freshness of his cigar collection inside the wine cellar. But wines and cigars both have differing optimum temperature and humidity for storage. The team installed a separate humidifier for the cigar humidor so it will have its own humidity-controlled environment. And, to eliminate the burden of constantly checking and filling the humidifier on the client’s end, Andre automated the humidification system by installing a self-filling humidifier.

More Details About this Elegant Cigar Humidor Installed Inside the Wine Cellar

The reveal row under the wine pegs allows for a combination of display options, including an easy place to store magnum sized bottles.

The cigar humidor was installed at the center of the wine cellar. The wooden and rustic humidor blends well with the modern and contemporary wine cellar. The combination of both designs brings balance to the atmosphere of the wine cellar.

Andre’s team used Spanish cedar in building the humidor. Spanish cedar is the perfect building material for storing your cigars due to several factors. Spanish cedar has a very high humidity absorption capacity as compared to other wood. This means it can be helpful in preventing mold growth and rotting of your cigars. It has a woody aroma that will deter tobacco worms from pestering your tobacco collection. This aroma also enhances the flavor of the cigar over time.

The max capacity of this cigar humidor is about 300 cigars. That’s a lot of cigars for an area so small for a humidor. Andre’s goal was to optimize the maximum capacity for the client’s cigar without compromising the quality of the build. And this amazing cigar humidor was the final product.

The Humidifier Used for Cigar Humidor Inside the Wine Cellar

House with this special wine cellar.

Andre used a US Cellar System Air Humidifier for the cigar humidor. It measures 12 inches in length, 6 inches in depth and weighs roughly 6 pounds. It’s very effective in controlling humidity for its size. The unit has a humidistat that can regulate the relative humidity from 5% to 90% (with a 1% variance). With this spread of range for RH (relative humidity) control, you have more flexibility in modifying the humidifier to fit the design and conditions of your cigar humidor and wine cellar.

The team opted to have the optional float valve installed for the humidifier. It’s a simple contraption that will trigger the reservoir or water source to release water into the water tank of the humidifier upon reaching a relatively low level of water. This small and ingenious device saves you the hassle of regularly checking up on the unit’s water level. The only time you’ll be checking up on your humidor is when you want to puff the delicate flavors coming from your cigar collection.

Not Bad for a First Cigar Humidor Project for the Team

This is a pioneer cigar humidor project for the team and it turned out beautifully!
