Wine Cellar Cooling Installations in California

Building a refrigerated wine cellar requires technical skills. Choosing the wrong type of wine cellar cooling system and installing it the wrong way will result in costly mistakes in the future. At Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, we help clients select and install the perfect climate-control unit for their needs.

Types of Wine Cellar Cooling Systems and 3 Practical Installation Methods

One of the most important questions people will have to deal with when building custom wine cellars is, “Which type of wine cooling system is the right one for my wine cellar?”

At Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, we install three different types of wine cellar cooling units: Split System Cooling, Through the Wall Self Contained Cooling System, and Ducted Air Handler Self Contained Cooling System. Each of the systems we offer has its own distinct advantages and gives you more than a few installation options to choose from.

We will perform a crucial step that will help us determine the best type of wine cellar cooling for your home or commercial establishment in California — the assessment of your needs.

We do not skip this step because we want to choose the right type, size, and capacity of wine cooling unit for your wine cellar. We will schedule an on-site visit, discuss details with you, and assess all of your requirements.

Split System Wine Cellar Cooling System

Split system cooling units are basically two separate components. The condensing unit is placed outside the house while the 2nd component, the evaporator unit, is typically mounted inside the wine cellar room.

This type of setup is ideal for cellar locations with a lot of limitations, such as lack of ventilation area or perhaps the presence of living spaces within or around the wine cellar walls.

The following wine cellar refrigeration systems do not use air ducts to ventilate air and just use pipelines to transfer refrigerated liquid to and from the wine cellar room.

Cabinet Cooler (CC) Series

The Cabinet Cooler Series is designed to control the flow of refrigerated air in relatively small and narrow spaces such as wine closets and wine cabinets. It is ideal in cases when only a low set point is required, such as when storing Champagne and white wines at serving temperature.

The Cabinet Cooler evaporator allows efficient air circulation up to 10 feet to both sides of the coil. The air is vented back to the front. Its ability to provide better BTU cooling per cubic inch makes it ideal for high-traffic areas.

Rack Cooler (RM) Series

RM Series Wine Cooling System

Available in 2,600 to 6,600 BTU per hour, the Rack Cooler Series wine cooling system is designed for medium to high wine cellar temperature spaces and offers installation flexibility. The unit can be installed within your wine racks, which is perfect for wine cellars designed for maximum storage capacity.

The evaporator will be installed in a horizontal position. We usually conceal it in a grill cover and box made of the same material as your wine racks. In cases where space is limited, it can be placed in a soffit or on a wall.

The access panels redirect the supply and return vents. With expanded copper tubing and staggered coils, you can expect your RM Series to operate with maximum cooling efficiency.

Wall Cooler (WM) Series

The Wall Cooler Series is mounted vertically between standard wall studs similar to mounting a through-the-wall unit.  Installation is relatively easy since it requires absolutely no exhaust room for heat dissipation. The unit only protrudes 1” into a room. It is excellent for oddly shaped rooms with lots of unused wall spaces such as in under-staircase wine cellars.

Through-the-Wall Self Contained Cooling System

Self-contained cooling systems have the two major components housed in a single container unit. This type is the easiest to install since you only need to bore a suitably sized hole on the wall and you’re almost done!

WhisperKOOL XLT Series Wine Cellar Cooling Unit

The WhisperKOOL XLT series is an economical solution for wine cellar cooling systemsThey are designed especially for wine enthusiasts who are on a tight budget but would like to enjoy WhisperKOOL’s excellent quality and performance.

It is equipped with a standard Condensate Evaporator. This feature allows excess moisture, which is produced by the cooling system, to be dissipated. These wine cooling units are equipped with a digital controller, an audible alarm, and large coils for dynamic airflow.

Extreme Platinum Wine Refrigeration Systems

The Extreme PlatinumSeries is more durable and perfect for exterior wall installations because of its 55°F temperature differential. Exterior wall deployment is possible due to its more powerful fans, larger coils and advanced controls compared to the more affordable XLT series.

Both the WhisperKOOL XLT and Extreme Platinum Series have options for Exhaust Duct Kits that allow you to vent warm exhaust air to another area other than the room adjacent to your cellar.

Ducted Air Handler Self-Contained Wine Cellar Refrigeration Systems

Ducted air handler self-contained systems are essentially self-contained systems, but instead of a through-the-wall installation, it uses air ducts to circulate air to and from your wine cellar. This type of setup eliminates the need for a suitable adjacent room for ventilation. Moreover, there will be no visible equipment within your residential or commercial wine cellar.

CellarMate‘s self-contained cooling unit uses air ducts to vent air thus providing wine collectors, as well as HVAC (Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning) and refrigeration professionals, versatility with its multiple installation options.
