Reclaimed Wine Barrels: Using Them in Making Stylish Custom Wine Cellar Flooring

Custom wine cellars are preferred by many wine collectors because of the customization options they offer. This means that the unique specifications desired by the client can be integrated into the wine cellar design. The owner can add features that will make their wine cellar space stand out and reflect their personality.

With Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, more customization options are offered. In addition to the wine racks, doors, and lighting, your wine cellar flooring can also be customized to match the theme of your wine cellar. One of the most popular choices of wine cellar flooring is oak wine barrel flooring.

What You Must Know About Wine Cellar Flooring Made from Oak Wine Barrels

Until now, wine barrels are being used to ferment and age wines. Aging wines in wine barrels will infuse some hints of vanilla, caramel, cream, or spice in the wine, resulting in improved texture, flavor, and color.

Typically, wine barrels have a shelf life of about ten years or less. After serving their purpose in wine storage, they are usually thrown away to the landfills, sold as firewood, or used as garden planters. Instead of letting the used wine barrels to be dumped into the landfills, our team recycles old wine barrels into planks that can be used to create flooring for wine cellars. In addition to helping save Mother Earth, we want to add a distinctive feature to our client’s wine cellar.

No two planks are the same, so every wine barrel flooring is unique. Its durability and timeless beauty make it a favorite flooring option in wine room construction.

Wine cellar flooring made of old oak wine barrels is a popular choice because of the natural and unique designs they can create. Here at Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, we use authentic original Napa Valley Oak Wine Barrels, creating exceptional design schemes for wine cellars.

How We Make Wine Barrel Flooring for Custom Wine Cellars

Coastal’s wine barrel flooring is featured with these important details:

  • Tongue and groove
  • Micro-beveled
  • 5/8 inch thickness
  • Random widths from 1 1/4” to 2 3/4”
  • Random lengths from 2’ to 5’
  • Pre-finished “Bona Traffic” sealant
  • Ready to install

Our team breaks the reclaimed wine barrels into long strips and micro-bevel them. We use the Tongue and Groove technique to add sturdiness to the flooring. Before nailing or gluing the flooring, we had to install a vapor barrier to help regulate the conditions inside the refrigerated wine cellar.

Another interesting thing about oak wine barrels is the option to use the inside, outside, or both sides of the barrel. This means that your flooring can have a golden brown color, an all-plain red color, or a blend of these colors. With these features, a lot of design combinations can be made to produce a wine cellar that reflects creativity and originality.

We offer three styles of wine barrel flooring: Stave, Cooperage, and Infusion. Stave wine barrel flooring is made up of the vertical wood on the sides of the barrel. It exhibits distinct markings from metal bands or hoops.

Cooperage wine barrel flooring consists of the top and bottom sections of the barrel. The planks bear the cooper stamps and markings, showing the vineyard labels and insignia of the winery, logos of the winemakers, and original content of the barrels.

Infusion-style wine barrel flooring is made up of the inner parts of the barrel. It has shades of red as a result of the color imparted by wine on the wood.

Coastal Custom Wine Cellars completed a home wine cellar project in Boston, Massachusetts, where the client chose to install wine barrel flooring. In this project, the wine room is located next to the tasting room. We used the Cooperage Series oak barrel flooring from Fontenay in both rooms.

Let Us Create Unique Wine Barrel Flooring for Your Wine Cellar

Do you want to incorporate a distinctive and eco-friendly feature into your wine cellar design? Coastal Custom Wine Cellars recommends wine barrel flooring to add a vintage touch to your wine room.

Other types of wine cellar flooring that we offer are tile, vinyl, marble, and slate. These flooring materials are very attractive as well and can complement the decorations within your wine cellar.

Take, for example, these custom wine cellars, with elegant and stunning wine cellar flooring:

Since a wine cellar with a climate control system typically has a damp environment, the flooring materials we use are only those that are able to withstand constant exposure to moisture. For this reason, we do not recommend carpets inside the wine cellar, as they are a suitable venue for mold and mildew growth.
