The Benefit of Investing in a Gorgeous Custom Home Wine Cellar in California

Custom wine cellars are in demand among homeowners in California. A well-designed wine room demonstrates functionality but also exhibits aesthetic quality.  Conceptual design and construction of residential wine rooms is a process that requires collaborative work between wine cellar builders and their clients in order to create the ideal environment for storing and aging wines, as well as for hosting parties and tasting events.

Custom wine cellars in California vary significantly in terms of size, style, and shape.  The overall design of a wine storage space depends entirely on its size.  Regardless of where clients decide to install their  custom home wine cellars, and whether it is a small closet or a garage conversion, professional wine cellar experts will come up with a design that will maximize storage space and complement the personality of the owner.

A recently completed Coto de Caza project in Orange County, California, demonstrates how a small closet under the stairs can be transformed into a sophisticated wine cellar space. After making a careful assessment of the client’s needs, we created 3D drawings so the owners could visualize their dream wine cellar. After they approved the design, we started the construction process.

With our team’s creativity, expertise, and extensive knowledge we exceeded the client’s expectations. We were able to build a wine storage facility in a limited space that could house 329 bottles. When the clients returned from their honeymoon, they were very pleased with the end product.

Wine Rack Design: Features and Materials

Wine racking systems are essential components of custom wine cellars California, as it helps in preserving the taste and flavor of wines.  They are designed to facilitate proper bottle placement wherein the cork maintains contact with the wine, so it stays moist and tight at all times.  Wine storage and display racks come in a range of designs and configurations that suit different needs and preferences.

For this wine cellar project, we created a racking system using a combination of different bottle configurations. The racking material plays a crucial role in achieving the appeal that the owner wants to achieve. In this project, we used Premium Mahogany and left the wood unfinished. Its natural beauty enhanced the beauty of this custom wine cellar in California.

Custom Wine Racks on the Back Wall

Upon entering this traditional residential wine room, you will see the individual wine storage racks on the back wall. Below the individual racking is a display row that can accommodate all standard size wine bottles pitched at an angle. The bottom section consists of solid diamond bins, which are ideal for bulk storage and for storing large format bottles.

Wine Racks on the Left Wall

On the left wall, we included horizontal display rows at the center and more diamond bins at the bottom. The end racking is a quarter round display rack, which provides additional storage for a few bottles and accessories that the client wants to highlight. We installed the wine cooling unit in the topmost section and concealed it in the same type of wood.

Entryway doors for residential wine rooms are purpose-built to help maintain the best storage environment for wines and to add visual appeal to the living space.  Wine cellar doors can be custom made to suit the design specifications of the client.

For this Coto de Caza project, we installed a beautiful 8’ Tuscan style door made from Clear Alder, which came with an intricate wrought iron design that was conceptualized by the client. Instead of the standard arched top, we chose a square top.

H3: The Right Choice of Wine Cellar Refrigeration System

To maintain the right amount of temperature and humidity, a wine storage space requires proper wine cellar refrigeration and efficient insulation and vapor barriers.  Wine cellar refrigeration systems are designed to keep the temperature within 55 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit and to regulate humidity between 60 to 70 percent.

There is a range of cooling systems out on the market that can accommodate various applications. We always perform a heat load calculation to determine the right size of cooling unit ideal for the project based on how big the room is and where it is located.

The wine cellar refrigeration unit for this wine room conversion project in Coto de Caza was supplied by Arctic Metalworks.  They installed a ductless split cooling system that provides efficient and whisper-quiet operation.

Ductless split climate control systems consist of the evaporator unit and condensing unit.  The latter is placed outdoors and the former inside the wine room.  In this particular wine cellar project, the condensing unit was installed in the patio area, clearly eliminating any noise inside the storage space. We had to place the line set that links the components of the refrigeration system together below the ground. We also had to replace the patio stones so that the line set could not be seen.

Although the evaporator is visible inside the residential wine room, it is covered by a lattice style Premium Redwood grill box to hide it from view.
