A Master Builder in California Offers Unique and Environment-Friendly Custom Flooring for Residential and Commercial Wine Cellars

Custom wine cellar flooring patterns are finishing touches added to a private or commercial wine cellar to complement the existing design of a storage space in Orange County, California.  It also provides additional insulation.

The choice of flooring material should be durable enough to weather spills and withstand the combined weight of all wine cellar furniture (such as wine racking systems, cabinetry, and tasting tables).

Different materials are used in manufacturing wine cellar flooring.  The most popular ones are recycled wine barrels, cork, and reclaimed nautical timbers.  These materials may possess different features, but there is one thing they all have in common: their environmentally-friendly qualities.

Wine Barrel Flooring

Wine barrel flooring is a flooring material produced from reclaimed oak wine barrels. These barrels are used to ferment and age wine, infusing some hints of caramel, vanilla, cream, or spice. Before bottling and shipping the wine, its flavor was enhanced, and the texture was improved by the oak barrel where it was contained.

The life expectancy of oak wine barrels is between five to seven years.  Instead of dumping retired wine barrels in landfills or selling them as planters or firewood, they are recycled into products that will help enhance the beauty of a living space and also sustain the environment.

How Custom Wine Barrel Flooring is Made by California Master Builders

We break the barrels into long strips about 5/8 inch thick. The length and width of the planks vary. We micro-bevel them to create a smooth surface by hiding the unequal heights of the planks. We also use a technique called tongue-and-groove to create solid flooring.

Styles of Custom Wine Barrel Flooring

Coastal Custom Wine Cellars offers three types of reclaimed oak wine barrel flooring:  cooperage, stave, and infusion.  Cooperage features stamps and markings of the corresponding winery.

The stave custom wine cellar flooring is composed of the vertical wood from the sides of the barrel.  It has distinctive markings left behind by removed metal bands.

The infusion is the plank that comes from the inside of the barrel.  It has beautiful shades of red or golden brown, which are the result of natural wine staining.

Recycled wine barrel flooring adds elegance and character to any wine storage space.  No two barrel planks are the same, which means that this flooring material can provide a one-of-a-kind appearance to both residential and commercial wine cellars.

Cork Custom Wine Cellar Flooring

Cork Wine Cellar Flooring

Cork Wine Cellar Flooring

Cork wine cellar flooring comes from the bark of the cork oak tree. The trees are not cut down when harvesting cork. Stripping the bark correctly will not affect the tree’s lifespan. Every 9-12 years, the oak tree can regenerate its growth.

The tree must be at least 25 years old before the bark can be harvested.  The harvesting of cork is done during the spring or summer.  Cork bark is composed of a honeycomb-like structure that contains 90% air.  This cellular composition provides cushion and insulation, which makes cork an ideal flooring material.

Benefits of Installing Cork Flooring in Your California Custom Wine Cellar

One of the benefits of cork flooring is its anti-allergenic and insect resistant properties.  Cork naturally contains suberin, a waxy substance that allows the cork to repel mold and mite infestation, and serves as reliable protection against rotting.  The cellular makeup of cork wine cellar flooring provides it with excellent noise reduction and shock absorbing qualities.

Cork flooring is a renewable and sustainable product because it is produced from waste fragments derived from the cork wine stopper manufacturing process.  It is available in different colors, shapes, and patterns that can match any décor.

The construction of cork flooring includes snapping the pieces of the tongue and groove together and securing them in place using a molding.

Nautical Timbers Custom Wine Cellar Flooring

Nautical timbers wine cellar flooring is made from the ballast and cribbage of old sea vessels.  These rustic timbers come from over 70 identified wood varieties that originated in Africa, South America, and Asia.  Due to their exposure to natural elements, nautical timbers are covered by marks and dents that lend them their unique features and timeless beauty.

Reclaimed nautical hardwood wine cellar flooring is carefully re-sawn in order to maintain its natural character and patina.  Baltic Birch plywood is installed as backing to add structural integrity to the timber.  Nautical timbers wine cellar flooring is a rare material that can elevate the overall style, and at the same time, evoke a sense of nostalgia for a wine storage space.
