The Perfect Small Wine Cellar Design for a Residential Custom Wine Room in Salem, New York

One of the most challenging tasks faced by most wine cellar designers and contractors is to create a beautiful and safe wine room while keeping the expenses under control. However, a professional builder like Coastal Custom Wine Cellars will always have a solution for every problem.

In a wine cellar installation project in Salem, New York, we had to stay within the client’s budget without compromising quality. Moreover, we also had to maximize the storage capacity since the room that we had to utilize was small.

At Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, we always use our creativity, passion, and expertise to exceed the expectations of our clients and provide their collection with a safe storage place. In this project, the space was only about six square-foot, but we were able to build a custom wine cellar that could fit more than 800 bottles of various sizes. We designed the wine cellar using a combination of custom and semi-custom wine racks.

Wine Rack Features that Make This Small Wine Cellar Design Worth it for This Home

The back wall is the focal point of this custom wine cellar in New York. We incorporated a square arch where the client could add a piece of artwork as the background. It is surrounded by individual bottle storage. It also comes with a wine tasting tabletop to provide a space for decanting, serving, and tasting wines.

We also added a 3-level opening below the tabletop, which is intended for wooden case storage. This type of wine rack allows for storing wines in bulk.

On the left and right walls, we installed mirror image racking, which features the diamond bins and rectangular bins at the top. On the sides of the diamond bins are single bottle storage racks and a display row.

The display row is ideal for highlighting the client’s favorite vintages. It pitches the bottles at a 15-degree angle, keeping the cork moist. When the cork dries out, it will eventually shrink and crack, putting the wine at risk due to oxidation.

Wine Rack Material

Wood is a popular material for wine racks. With many wood species available, it is best to consult a specialist like Coastal Custom Wine Cellars to determine the best material for your wine racks. We always consider the aesthetic preferences, functional requirements, and budget of our clients.

In this project, we used Premium Redwood, a type of wood that is well-known for its beauty and durability. We left the wine racks unfinished, showing the naturally beautiful tones of Premium Redwood that add character to this custom wine cellar in New York.

We also offer wine racks made from Mahogany, Alder, and Pine.

Installing an Efficient Wine Cooling System to Create the Optimum Conditions Required in the Proper Aging of the Wines

The WhisperKOOL Wine Cooling Unit was the Ideal Choice for This New York Custom Wine Cellar

The WhisperKOOL Wine Cooling Unit was the Ideal Choice for This New York Custom Wine Cellar

The wine cooling system is a crucial component of a wine cellar. Its primary role is to create an ideal environment that will help the wines preserve their desirable characteristics before they are ready for consumption.

We consider the following factors when choosing the size and type of wine cooling unit for your project:

  • The location and size of your wine cellar
  • The availability of an exhaust room
  • Your budget

At Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, we offer self-contained (through-the-wall), ductless, and ducted wine cellar refrigeration systems with different capacities. If your chosen builder utilized the wrong wine cooling unit or installed it incorrectly, your wine room will not preserve the quality of your wines and will not create the perfect wine storage environment.

A high-quality wine refrigeration system plays a vital role in regulating the temperature, which should be between 55 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Anything outside this range will have a negative effect on the quality of your wines. When exposed to high temperatures, the wine’s chemical properties will be altered, causing it to taste like burnt fruit or wet cardboard.

Another reason your wine cooling unit should be chosen and installed by a professional is to ensure that the ideal humidity level (60% to 70%) is achieved.

Our team made sure that the wine room was insulated and installed with a vapor barrier before installing the wine refrigeration system. Skipping this step could lead to condensation, which can result in mold growth.

For this small wine cellar design, we utilized the Slimline 2500 model from WhisperKooL, which is designed for wine cellars up to 500 cubic feet in size. We placed the unit just above the door.
