In Laguna Beach, a narrow space was transformed by Coastal Custom Wine Cellars into a custom wine cellar with features for maximizing storage capacity while creating a stylish wine display. The wine racks are earthquake-proof, and we added a library-style ladder to provide the owners with easy access to their wines stored beyond their reach.

Traditional Custom Wine Cellar Built in a Home in Newport Coast by Coastal Custom Wine Cellars

Coastal Custom Wine Cellars built a gorgeous wine cellar. The space was large, so it was easier for us to create a design that would match the existing décor, meet the requirements of the owners, and add extra features.

The room measured 13 ft. X 20 ft. X 10 ft. We were able to create a wine storage space for more than 4,000 bottles! In 2008, Coastal Custom Wine Cellars created 3-dimensional drawings, which we submitted for review by the client. After several changes were made, we finalized the design, and we started the construction in July 2011. Most of the components were fully assembled from our factory, which helped us complete the custom wine cellar installation in a matter of one week.

Custom Wine Rack Features Ideal for a Large Wine Cellar in California

California is an earthquake-prone area. We found a way to protect our client’s prized wine collection. We installed wine racks that are slightly tilted backward to minimize the shaking of the bottles during an earthquake.

The custom wine racks were constructed in Malaysian Mahogany, one of the most sought-after types of wood in the construction and design industry. This type of wood is known for its durability and high resistance to moisture, making it suitable for damp conditions such as in refrigerated wine cellars. We applied the Mahogany wine racks with a rustic stain and clear lacquer finish creating a glossy appearance.

We installed floor-to-ceiling wine racks, which go up to the 10-foot high ceiling. We combined the following racking styles to create a unique and elegant wine storage and display area:

  • Storage Openings for Wood Wine Case
  • Horizontal Wine Racks for 750 ml., 1.5 L, 3 L, and 6 L Bottles
  • Arched Passages
  • Display Rows

The high-reveal display rows allow the owners to highlight some of their bottles. The bottles are pitched at an angle to keep the cork moist. When the cork dries out, it will become brittle and shrink. When it loses its sealing ability, oxygen will enter the bottle and oxidize the wine.

The style of wine cellar is a one-of-a-kind. Coastal Custom Wine Cellars created aisles for the wine storage section, just like a traditional library with bookcases.

When you enter the residential wine room, you will go through a series of arched passages before you reach the gorgeous lattice arch display with a tabletop.

We installed rolling ladders to make it convenient for the owners to have access to the bottles stored at the topmost sections of the tall wine racks. Moreover, this type of ladder makes it easier to move from one wall to another. We created storage niches for the ladders so the owners could keep them tucked away when not needed.

Wine Cellar Refrigeration System

In addition to creating a striking custom wine cellar design, it is Coastal’s goal to safeguard our client’s collection from the adverse effects of too much heat and varying levels of humidity. Climate control systems play a vital role in the proper preservation of your wines. Without it, your wines will spoil.

Make sure that you work with an HVAC expert like Coastal Custom Wine Cellars. When chosen and installed correctly by a professional, it will create the optimum environment required in wine aging.

Keep in mind that you cannot use a regular air conditioning system for your wine cellar because it is not capable of achieving the perfect wine storage conditions. At Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, we use commercial grade wine refrigeration systems from trusted manufacturers.

Wine Room Preparation

We always make sure that the wine room is prepared well for refrigeration. Before installing the wine cellar cooling unit, we had to insulate the walls and ceiling.

Insulation prevents the cold air from escaping the wine room and the warm air from getting in. Correct wine room insulation also helps the refrigeration system to run efficiently. Failure to do it the right way will trigger mold growth inside the wine cellar.

How We Determined the Ideal Type and Size of Wine Cooling Unit

As a standard procedure, we performed a heat load calculation to determine the right type, capacity, and size of the wine refrigeration system for this project. Using this method, we will know the required BTU’s, considering the following factors:

  • Amount of glass to be used
  • Size and location of the wine room
  • Heat resources (including sunlight and electrical appliances

We installed a self-contained ducted air handler, essentially a dedicated, central ducted system for the wine room. No equipment was installed inside the wine room, which has two advantages: a clean look and no noise coming from the wine cellar cooling system.
